Introduction to techniques, materials, and vocabulary in oil painting. Still life, landscape, and figure used as subject matter. Emphasis is on painting and drawing from life.

What does it mean to paint in direct relationship to a specific location? In this course students will combine comprehensive entry-level introduction to materials and methods of plein-air painting with a critical dialogue about and creative approach to working ‘en plein air’ in the twenty-first century. The focus of the course is on direct observation of color as it is influenced by light, developing a critical response to our relationship with the places we inhabit over time, as well as the practicalities of working outside of a studio setting.
